Preventive medicine physicians have the best lifestyle balance of 36 specialties, according to a Sept. 22 analysis from a physician salary platform.
The Lifestyle Balance Index was built from more than 24,400 anonymous salary and schedule submissions from full-time physicians. The index combines five factors: average weekly hours, schedule quality, call burden, percent clinical time and average annual PTO. Each factor is normalized so 1 equals the all-specialty average.
Here are the top 10 specialties by index score, along with average weekly hours:
1. Preventive medicine: 1.50 (40.5 hours)
2. Dermatology: 1.44 (38.8 hours)
3. Allergy and immunology: 1.39 (40.2 hours)
4. Rheumatology: 1.34 (40.6 hours)
5. Psychiatry: 1.33 (40.9 hours)
6. Family medicine: 1.30 (41.8 hours)
7. Physical medicine and rehabilitation: 1.27 (43.1 hours)
8. Oral and maxillofacial surgery: 1.26 (43.1 hours)
9. Ophthalmology: 1.22 (42 hours)
10. Endocrinology: 1.22 (42.5 hours)
