Fifty eight-percent of U.S. physician leaders say they hope to become a CEO one day, according to a new McKinsey & Co. survey of 296 physicians.

Among the 258 who are not currently CEOs, 58% expressed interest in the top leadership role. Another 16% were unsure, while 26% said they do not aspire to be CEO.

Here are four more key findings:

1. Fifteen percent of CEOs in the nation’s top healthcare and life sciences organizations are physicians.

2. Among surveyed physicians, 51% said their top motivation for pursuing leadership is making a broader impact on patient care.

3. Leading innovation and transformation in healthcare was identified as a key motivator by 42% of respondents.

4. More than half of physicians (52%) pointed to negative perceptions of physicians’ leadership or business capabilities as the biggest external barrier to advancement.
